Have you have accidentally become a Bermudian?!?!

Believe it or not, I very occasionally come across people who have been added to the Register of Bermudians by mistake. It's not entirely clear how this happens, although all such people happened to be BOT citizens, and so I think it is something to do with processing BOT or passport applications. It is obviously a very happy surprise.

If Immigration discovers that somebody is on the register by mistake, they can have you taken off, but it can still provide a pathway for your children to apply for Bermudian status, provided they were under the age of 22 when you were added to the Register. This is because the laws says that a person who is on the Register of Bermudians is conclusively deemed to have been Bermudian for the time that they were on the Register. And the child under the age of 22 of such a person is also deemed to be Bermudian, and so can apply for status upon reaching 18. Although never tested in court, my view is that this applies regardless of whether the parent was only on the status Register by mistake.

If somebody is taken off the Register in these circumstances, it might also be possible to re-apply for status on the basis that you are a person who previously held Bermudian status. It may be necessary to have been on the Register for ten years for this to work.
